Fairfield County isn't just good deer country. It ranks sixth-highest in South Carolina by total deer hunters, according to SCDNR harvest data, and the terrain around Winnsboro earns that reputation the hard way. Red-clay two-tracks, creek bottoms that go soft overnight, and back gates that sit a long drive from the pavement on US 321. The right truck isn't an afterthought out here. It's the difference between a clean pack-out and a recovery call.
We've built this plan for a full hunting-season day in Fairfield County, and it runs on two trucks our team at the Silverado 1500 knows well. One for the hunter who needs to tow a box blind or ATV trailer, and one for the hunter who wants to run tight forest cuts without grinding up a full-size. Pick your truck, pull this plan up before daylight, and go.
What's the Route?
Fairfield County sits in Game Zone 2 (per SCDNR), so the 2026-2027 gun season runs October 11 through January 1, and primitive weapons opened October 1 before that. You get a serious three-month window, and we've built this route to hold up on any Saturday from opening weekend through the December push.
| Stop | Drive Time from Winnsboro | What to Do | What to Pack |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Pre-dawn gear check, US 321 | 0 min (staging) | Load up, confirm tags and orange, fuel up | Cooler, blind bags, rifle/bow case, first aid kit |
| 2. Private or WMA land access near Sumter National Forest | 20-35 min | Morning sit (archery Sept. 15-30; guns Oct. 11+) | Stand/blind, grunt call, drag rope, scent control bag |
| 3. Winnsboro town square / butcher drop | 15-20 min from field | Field dress pickup or butcher drop-off, resupply lunch | Tagged deer, ice bags for cooler |
| 4. Carolina Adventure World access road debrief | 10-15 min from town | Scout ATV trails for next trip; check side-by-side fits in bed | Trail map, ATV tie-down straps |
The full loop runs roughly 60-80 miles depending on where you access the land. Both trucks handle it. You'll notice the differences at stops 2 and 4.
The Four Stops, Broken Down
Stop 1: Staging on US 321 Before First Light
A five-minute systems check in the parking lot is easy to skip, and it's the kind of thing that costs you at the trailhead. Chevrolet lists 12 standard tie-down cleats (rated at 500 lbs each) in the Silverado 1500's Durabed, so load your ATV or box-blind frame and test the straps before dark instead of after you're parked at the gate. Five minutes before you leave matters.
The Colorado is a better choice here if you're hunting solo or with one partner and don't need to tow. Its 2.7L TurboMax engine produces 430 lb-ft of torque (Chevrolet spec, all trims), and the Trail Boss trim rides on 9.5 inches of ground clearance, enough to clear the clay road ruts that show up after the first fall rain.
Stop 2: The Morning Sit Near Sumter National Forest
Sumter National Forest holds accessible public land within range of Fairfield County, and this is the stop where truck size starts to earn its keep. The two-tracks threading into WMA edges and forest buffer zones run narrow. Tight. A Crew Cab Silverado 1500 with a long bed gets you there, but you'll be watching mirrors the whole way. A Colorado (especially Trail Boss or Z71) fits those cuts more naturally and still pulls a loaded utility trailer up to 7,700 lbs when properly equipped, which covers a single ATV or a small hunting trailer without problem.
There's a real tradeoff, though. The Colorado's short bed (61.7 inches) becomes a genuine constraint on a pack-out day. A field-dressed buck, a blind bag, two sets of gear, and a cooler will fill that bed fast. Know your kit before you commit.
Stop 3: Field Dress Pickup or Butcher Drop in Winnsboro
Whether you dress in the field or take it straight to a processor, you're coming back through Winnsboro, and the Silverado 1500 earns its keep on this leg. Chevrolet rates the 2026 Silverado 1500 at up to 2,260 lbs of available payload (configuration-dependent, per the door-jamb label), so a full-size cooler loaded with ice and a deer won't push the truck's limits. The 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 with the trailering package handles up to 11,300 lbs, so if you're running a larger enclosed trailer with gear for a camp setup, that headroom is real.
Tire pressure is the easy thing to let slide on a heavily loaded half-ton before a long season. Chevrolet builds a Tire Pressure Monitoring System into the Silverado lineup. Pressure drops with the cold, so check it before every loaded trip. Don't wait for the warning light.
Stop 4: Carolina Adventure World Scout Run
Why not head straight home after the butcher drop? The better use of daylight is scouting the next trip, and Carolina Adventure World sits on 2,600 acres with 100 miles of ATV and UTV trails, so it's a logical test loop if you want to see how your rig handles Piedmont off-road terrain before committing to a camp setup.
The Silverado 2500 HD enters the conversation here. If your hunting camp involves a larger camper or a heavy duty enclosed trailer, the 2026 Silverado 2500 HD gets you up to 18,500 lbs of towing with the 6.6L gas V8, per Chevrolet specifications. That number reaches camp-trailer territory, more than a blind and a four-wheeler. The Colorado's off-road trims are genuinely capable for scouting, but if you're pulling serious weight into a base camp, the HD earns its designation.
Tweak It to Your Crew
Four stops cover one or two hunters cleanly, but the math shifts the moment you add people and gear to the day, so you'll want to size the truck to the crew you actually bring rather than to opening-morning optimism. A Crew Cab Silverado 1500 seats five adults comfortably and still leaves you the full bed, which keeps a whole family hunt on one vehicle, kids in the back seats and gear in the bed. A Colorado with a Trail Boss or Z71 trim is the right answer if you're hunting solo, running tight public-land cuts, and your trailer is a single ATV rather than a camp rig.
One configuration our team wouldn't overlook is the Silverado 1500 with the 3.0L Duramax Diesel. Chevrolet rates it at 13,300 lbs towing and 495 lb-ft of torque. It also carries diesel efficiency on the highway, which matters on a long I-77 run up to a lease in the upper county. All that torque arrives low in the rev range, exactly what a loaded trailer needs on a wet clay grade.
